the nus school of design & environment has signed an mou with leading global filtration specialist, mann_hummel on 7 feb 2018 at the school of design & environment conference room. the school management committee was delighted to welcome mr thomas fischer, chairman of the supervisory board at mann+hummel and mr jason tang, vice president, intelligent air solutions and 5 other mann-hummel representatives at the signing ceremony.
this mou collaboration seeks to share knowledge, advance research and collaborate on areas of mutual interest, in particular, that of developing solutions for better indoor air quality and promoting human health and wellness in buildings, support research fellowships and student internship programmes, collaborate on design research on mutually agreed topics.

seven students under the research direction of associate professor joseph lim won the prestigious pioneer architects (lim chong keat) prize for the most rigorous experimental thesis in architecture. it is the first time the university has awarded the prize to a group instead of individual students.

05 june 2017 - nus design students show their works, including kitchen tools for blind people
the 15th graduation show of the division of industrial design (did) at nus school of design and environment, is held at the national design centre till 8 june 2017. it showcases the projects of 34 students who will graduate in july with a bachelor of arts (hons) in industrial design, as well as 24 projects by current undergraduates from did. the report featured folks, a series of kitchen tools that leverages on sensory feedback to allow people who are blind to prepare food safely and conveniently, which was developed by graduating student mr kevin chiam. another creation titled new ways of seeing mobile user interface for baby boomers, is a set of innovative visual elements that seeks to make mobile devices easier for the older generation to use, developed by graduating student ms lim xin yuan.

the straits times"s "ode to the heartland" was a feature on three projects that explore different facets and angles of hdb flats and suburban neighbourhoods. one of the projects, by architect mr tomoshisa miyauchi, a senior lecturer at the department of architecture; art educator mr tamae iwasaki; and fine art printer mr eitaro ogawa offers a look at the lives of hdb residents. over three years, they photographed 118 households to show how each owner put his own spin on the interiors. the project resulted in a 680-page photography book hdb: homes of singapore, showcasing the everyday lives of singaporeans in their hdb flats, which went on sale last month. read more at here.

at the world economic forum, the international sustainable campus network (iscn) in collaboration with the global university leaders forum (gulf) shared exemplary campus sustainability case studies provided by 30 the world’s leading universities all focused on educating for sustainability. by including sustainable development in the strategic goals for all their activities, universities can create an environment that promotes holistic education of all students. to complement professional and disciplinary education, they can expose students to the practical problems that must be solved in order to achieve the sdgs. they can foster the acquisition of critical, systems-oriented thinking as well as the ability to communicate with various stakeholders within and outside academia.
on this note, iscn featured sde’s net-zero energy building (nzeb@sde), conceptualized from a rock-solid foundation in sustainability education and research to be the first purpose-built net zero energy building in a singapore tertiary institution to transform teaching in sustainable design, as an excellent example of nus’s commitment to protect the environment and incorporate sustainability in all aspects of campus life – from education and research to operations.

division of industrial design (nusdid) students were one of the two winning teams in a joint collaboration with nus enterprise, ikea singapore and space10, with the aim of finding out how ikea can use conversational tech and ai to foster meaningful interactions with people. the winning team, team duktig, addressed the in-store experience with particular focus on guiding shoppers and creating shared experiences for groups. the team set out to reinvent the iconic ikea pencil and give it an active new role as a personal assistant during the ikea visit, using conversational tech, ai and bone conduction.

we need a major paradigm shift in the way we build and operate our buildings and live our lives. being less bad, which is what most green building programs help us achieve, is not going to help us solve some of our major human and environmental problems such as climate change, habitat destruction, loss of biodiversity, chronic diseases and social injustice.
